The Boys Review

I’m Back and not empty handed (This is a non-spoiler review of the Amazon exclusive show The Boys)

Hey, it’s been a while since I wrote anything. I had the pleasure to attend an advanced screening of the pilot for the Amazon Studios’ exclusive show The Boys in Baltimore.  The infamous Rob Lee and I went to the screening.

Advanced Screenings are a good look

Before I begin please before taking your kid to see anything make sure you research the show or movie before taking them. I was extremely surprised to see a kid at our screening and seeing the parent cover the kid’s eyes and ears for virtually every scene felt sad.

Take note that not everything with superheroes are for kids.  With that being said, this is NOT a kid’s show and it make sure you know that this show will go to the extreme.

Background on The Boys

Based on the Dynamite Entertainment comic series written by Garth Ennis, The Boys tackles the idea that Superheroes are corrupted by their own celebrity status and cause collateral damage. A CIA task force known as the Boys are assigned to track and monitor all Supers.

The Cast

The show is centered around Hughie Campbell played by Jack Quaid. His life is turned upside down by an incident that occurred when encountering his first superhero.  Later, Hughie encounters Billy Butcher played by Karl Urban who recruits him to be a member of the Boys.

Additionally, Elizabeth Shue’s character Madelyn Stillwell who is actually a guy named James Stillwell. In the comics runs Vought International, a defense contractor that owns the Seven. The Seven is the main superhero team, a pastiche of DC Comics Justice League. They’re led by an imitation of Superman, The Homelander, played by Antony Starr.

The 1st episode delves into the celebrity of superheroes and what could happen if they are corrupted fame and fortune.

An Idiot’s Review of…

For starters, this show is absolutely hilarious and also graphic. The show’s graphic nature isn’t new considering the showrunners Eric Kripke (Supernatural), Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg their adapted television series Preacher became a massive hit.

Also, casting is amazing with special kudos to Shue and Urban.  Karl Urban seems like he’s having the time of his life as Billy Butcher. He continues to prove he’s one of the most underappreciated actors today.  The graphic nature of the show will turn some folks off of the show – seriously still can’t believe someone brought their kid to the screening.

Lastly, one scene in particular involving Erin Moriarty’s Starlight will possibly lead to a divisive reaction and her story moving forward.

Conclusion

There’s a lot that I liked about the pilot and there’s much more to unravel. The premise is very interesting and refreshing as the Superhero genre of films and shows needed a twist like this.  I predict The Boys will massive hit Amazon Studios.

I highly recommend watching the pilot and very interested in reading Garth Ennis’ series as well. The Boys will premiere on July 26th 2019.
