Crown City Cooking | Top 7 Cookout Foods

It’s officially summer! That means it’s time to get grillin’!

Here at MTR the Network, we are constantly going back and forth on what makes the perfect assortment of foods based on special occasions. Naturally, we had to put a short list together of the must-haves at any summer cookout.

1. Steak

The king of meats, now and forever. Steak is the one food that is expected at any cookout. Regardless of the cut, steak holds that distinct charred smell that is synonymous with grilling.

2. Burgers and Dogs

Cookouts mean quality family time and families mean kids, and kids mean you can always count on hot dogs and hamburgers to satisfy picky eaters. Hell, anyone who is use to gorging at get-togethers will usually start with a hot dog or hamburger before the heavy foods come off the grill.

3. Grilled Veggies

Vegetables are great, but grilled they become something incredible! There is a myriad of vegetables that will work on the grill. Zucchini, yellow squash, red peppers, mushrooms and Vidalia onions are are top picks.

4. Ribs

They’re saucy, messy and every bit an essential at backyard BBQs. While spareribs are rumored to have “superior flavor”, baby back ribs offer more meat at a reduced cook time.

5. Full Ears of Corn

Every cookout I’ve been to since childhood has included this buttery delight. Much like dessert, there is always room for at least one ear of corn before you finally conceding defeat to the itis. If you choose to grill your corn, make sure to leave the husks on.

6. Salad of Some Sort

You need a palate cleanser to go along with all that meat. Most people I know go all out, offering the usual trio of potato, macaroni and egg salad. Then there’s always  the possibility of wild card salad, like broccoli thrown together with dressing, cheese and raisins. As long as you offer one mayo based ice cold salad, your guests will be happy.

7. Shish kebab

Shish Kebab are quite possibly the most versatile grill recipe of all time. Pick a protein or two and some veggies to compliment it and you’re set. The options are near limitless. My personal favorite includes steak tips, sliced jalapeños and shrimp.
